KLANG: The municipal councillor in charge of Pulau Ketam should explain why he had endorsed the move to trap dogs from the island and dump them on the nearby uninhabited Pulau Tengah and Pulau Selat.
Bukit Gasing assemblyman Edward Lee said the Klang Municipal (MPK) councillor should also reveal who had instructed him to do so.
Pulau Ketam residents had trapped and dumped the dogs on the island in early March with allocations provided by MPK councillor in charge of Pulau Ketam Tee Beng Lee.
To date animal sanctuary the Furry Friends Farm (FFF) has rescued six dogs whilst the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has rescued two.
Lee who accompanied the FFF team on their rescue mission last Saturday said it was time for MPK to be involved in the operations.
“MPK has to liaise with the rescue teams and use their resources to rescue the dogs. This is the only way for the counsel to appease domestic and international outcry,” said Lee.
Meanwhile, besides issues, heckles are also expected at a meeting between MPK and animal welfare groups and activists today.
The meeting, initiated by Kapar MP S. Manikavasagam, is being held to find ways to rescue the dogs from the uninhabited islands, that come under the Kapar parliamentary constituency.
Blogger TV Smith, who initiated and heads the FFF rescue team, said it was not possible to rope in Pulau Ketam residents to help in the rescue work due to their apathy.
“Most of them still don’t think they have done anything wrong,” he added.
He said the residents were also charging them more than the usual rate for boats to go to Pulau Tengah and Pulau Selat Kering.

PORT KLANG: All animal welfare groups and independent rescuers have been asked to be involved in the managing of strays in the state.
“I urge everyone to come forward and give their suggestions on how we can tackle the problem,” said state local government, research and studies committee chairman Ronnie Liu.
His call came in the wake of an international outcry over the dumping of hundreds of stray dogs on a nearby islands by Pulau Ketam residents.
The residents’ excuse was that they were no longer able to tolerate the growing stray dog population on their island.
Liu also invited independent rescuers to get in touch with the Klang Municipal Council which will be holding a meeting for animal rescue groups on Monday.
“Please attend and tell the council what can be done to rescue the dogs as well as prevent more such incidents from occurring,” he added.
Animal rescue groups such as the Furry Friends Farm and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have been going on rescue missions to Pulau Tengah and Pulau Selat Kering. However, the groups have only been able to rescue five dogs.
Meanwhile, the Buddhist Chief High Priest of Malaysia Venerable K. Sri Dhammaratana said he was upset when he read about what the Pulau Ketam folk did.
“It shows that they lack compassion. To abandon dogs on an island which has no food and water is unacceptable.
“They have forgotten that these dogs are living things,” he told The Star yesterday.
Dhammaratana added that, as a dog lover, he was rankled that people could resort to such cruelty.
Independent Pet Rescuers founder Sherrina Krishnan said it was time for the Government to be seriously involved in the matter.
“It may appear to be a trivial matter to some but what the Pulau Ketam folk have done has created a lot of negative publicity for Malaysia,” she added.
“There are also many blogs that have been created in the West, calling for all visits to Malaysia to be halted until the dogs dumped by the Pulau Ketam residents have been rescued,” she said.
It is believed that more independent rescue groups will be going to the islands to rescue the dogs next week.

PORT KLANG: The dogs abandoned on an uninhabited island by Pulau Ketam residents were so frightened at the sight of a big group of people that they fled deeper into the island.
A five-member team from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and nine newsmen came to the island off Pulau Selat Kering yesterday on a mission to rescue the dogs.
“Only two dogs were captured. The others just ran off,” said SPCA spokesman Jacinta Johnson.
She said they brought food to coax the dogs towards the shoreline but due to the incoming tide, they refused to approach the relief team.
The lost dogs:Rescuers carrying the two dogs from Pulau Tengah Wednesday where a total of 400 dogs were left there to fend for themselves. “However, our operation is still meaningful as it has given us a better idea of the island and the movement of the dogs there.
“We won’t bring the media along in our next relief effort,” she said.
The team placed dog food and drinking water on the island before leaving the place.
A month ago, Pulau Ketam residents trapped about 400 dogs and transported them to Pulau Tengah to ease the stray dog population on their island.
The dogs, which lived below the stilt houses, would come up to the wooden platform during high tide.
Pulau Ketam village head Cha Keng Lee said most residents felt that the move to send the animals to the nearby island would resolve the stray dog problem.
The uninhabited island would also offer more space to the dogs, he said.
“Our aim was not to be cruel to the dogs. But we strongly feel that the stray dog problem must be solved. When the dogs come up to the platform, they defecate all over. Sometimes, they would also bite the children,” he said.

Rasa sedih betul bila baca kat bawah ni...Kesian kat haiwan yang tak berdosa..Harap kita dapat mengambil iktibar dan pengajaran daripadanya dan tidak bertindak sezalim ini. Semoga Allah memberikan hidayah kepada sebahagian penduduk2 pulau yg kejam nih...Diharapkan jugak agar nasib anjing2 ni benar2 akan terbela a.s.a.p. Sememangnya nasib kucing2 di KYUEM jauh lebih baik berbanding anjing2 tu. Plight of the swamp dogs.
PORT KLANG: Animal activist Sabrina Yeap couldn’t hold back her tears when she saw the condition of the dogs that Pulau Ketam residents had dumped on an uninhabited island.
“They were wandering aimlessly, often looking towards Pulau Ketam with eyes that appeared empty and listless,’’ said Yeap who went to Pulau Tengah last Saturday to check on the welfare of the dogs.
Several fishermen, a volunteer, and blogger TV Smith accompanied Yeap on the trip to the island, which is in the middle of a mangrove swamp.
“The fishermen told us that some of the dogs had died of starvation, and those that are alive ate the carcasses,’’ said Yeap.
Waiting to be rescued: Several of the abandoned dogs on Pulau Tengah looking wistfully at the approaching visitors. Inset: Yeap bringing an injured Hope back to the mainland.--Gambar yg sungguh menyayat hati...Kesian kat anjing2 tu... Pulau Ketam residents had trapped some 400 dogs and transported them to Pulau Tengah to ease the stray dog population on their island.
Yeap said the fishermen told her that some of the dogs had tried to swim back to the main island but had been shooed away, resulting in some of them drowning.
“It was a pitiful sight, and I couldn’t stop crying after I saw what was happening to the dogs there,’’ said Yeap.
She added that she would be taking 20 dogs to her Furry Friends Farm in Kundang to be rehabilitated and eventually re-homed.
“I wish I could take in more dogs, but can’t due to space and financial constraints,’’ said Yeap, who managed to save a dog she found trapped in the mud.
The dog, since named Hope, is recuperating at a veterinary clinic pending transfer to Yeap’s sanctuary.
Yeap said she hoped farm and orchard owners would come forward to adopt some of the abandoned dogs.
Kapar MP S. Manikavasagam said he would be visiting Pulau Ketam to talk to the residents over what they had done (Pulau Ketam and Pulau Tengah fall under the Kapar parliamentary constituency).
“It is wrong to dump dogs where they cannot survive. I will bring this matter up with the relevant authorities,’’ he said.
Manikavasagam added that he was prepared to accompany Yeap and Smith on their next visit to Pulau Tengah.
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) spokesman Jacinta Johnson said a relief team would be sent to Pulau Tengah to try and rescue the dogs.
“We will try to round up the healthier dogs and neuter them. For the weaker ones, we have no choice but to put them to sleep,” she added.
The SPCA would also seek the cooperation of Pulau Ketam residents to set up a temporary dog shelter if required.

Insurance:
BBB at A-Level in 3 subjects including Biology
Syabas buat bahagian biasiswa KPM!!!
Sebenarnya, Queen Mary, University of London ni tidak tersenarai dlm top-20, so mungkin sebab tu la kpm tak nak luluskan (memilih jugak ye).
Insyaallah...

Leave it to geneticists to answer a question that has perplexed humanity since the dawn of time: does love at first sight truly exist?
According to a study published in the April 2009 issue of the journal GENETICS (
http://www.genetics.org/), a team of scientists from the United States and Australia discovered that at the genetic level, some males and females are more compatible than others, and that this compatibility plays an important role in mate selection, mating outcomes, and future reproductive behaviors.
In experiments involving fruit flies, the researchers found that before mating, females experience what amounts to "genetic priming," making them more likely to mate with certain males over others.
"Our research helps to shed light on the complex biochemistry involved in mate selection and reproduction," said Mariana Wolfner, Professor of Developmental Biology at Cornell University and the senior scientist involved in the study. "These findings may lead to ways to curb unwanted insect populations by activating or deactivating genes that play a role in female mating decisions," she added.
To reach their conclusions, scientists mated two different strains of fruit fly females to males either from their own strain or to males from the other strain. They noted the males with which females of each strain tended to mate and then examined whether the females showed differences in behavior soon after mating and in reproduction-related activities, such as how many offspring were produced and how many sperm were stored.
They also examined the females' RNA to compare the genes expressed in females mated to males of different strains. They found that despite observed differences in mating behaviors and reproduction activities in females mated to different strains of males, there were only negligible mating-dependent differences in gene expression between the groups.
This suggests that genetic changes involved in mate choice and reproduction were in place before mating began.
"It appears that females really do care about the character of their consorts," said Mark Johnston, Editor-in-Chief of the journal GENETICS, "but they may not have as much control over our choice of mates as they'd like to think."

There are many things you can do at home to reduce the frequency and severity of
tension headaches. Reducing stress, getting regular exercise, eating right, and learning better ways to manage depression and anxiety may help.
Try the following:
- Find healthy ways to deal with stress. You may be more likely to get tension headaches during stressful times.
- Do relaxation exercises to reduce muscle tension and stress, which may help reduce the frequency and duration of tension headaches.
- Take medicine as prescribed by your doctor to prevent and treat your tension headaches. This will also help you to avoid getting rebound headaches, which can be caused by overusing pain relievers.
- Identify your headache triggers and determine whether your headaches are becoming more severe, by keeping a headache diary.
- Seek help if you think your tension headaches may be linked to depression or anxiety. Proper treatment of these conditions may reduce the frequency of your headaches, as well as relieve your symptoms of anxiety or depression.
|
Tension headaches are one of the most common types of headaches. They can be triggered by
stress,
anxiety,
depression, hunger, anger,
fatigue, overexertion, poor posture, and
muscle strain. Tension headaches may come on suddenly or gradually. Prolonged sitting, having poor posture, or eyestrain can also trigger tension headaches. The headache may disappear after you relax or take a nonprescription pain reliever, such as aspirin or ibuprofen.
Tension headaches can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 7 days. If you have at least 15 tension headaches a month over a 6-month period, you may have chronic tension headaches. Chronic headaches can lead to stress and depression, which in turn can prolong the cycle of headaches. Treatment is available to reduce the frequency or stop the occurrence of chronic tension headaches.

Advertisements with tantalizing promises of improved health, prevention of cancer and heart disease, and greater energy have lured millions of people to spend billions of dollars on the purchase of multivitamins.
An article in the February 9 issue of
Archives of Internal Medicine reported that multivitamin use did not protect the 161,808 postmenopausal women enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative Study from common forms of cancer, heart attacks, or strokes. And the numbers of deaths during the 8 years of the study were the same in vitamin users as in non-users. Still, it is important to recognize that this was an observational study, not a more meaningful clinical trial. Although these findings apply only to women, other studies have failed to show benefits of multivitamins in older men.
These results are not at all surprising for several reasons. No large study has shown that multivitamins significantly benefit healthy men and women. In addition, for some years physicians prescribed folic acid and vitamin B12 and B6 in the hopes of preventing heart attacks and strokes by lowering blood level of homocysteine. (High blood levels of homocysteine are associated with an increased risk of coronary and other vascular diseases.) A number of recent studies, however, have shown that, while these vitamins do lower homocysteine levels, they do not prevent heart attacks or strokes.
Many doctors have also prescribed the antioxidants vitamin E and beta-carotene to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Alas, studies have now proven that these supplements are not protective--and may even be harmful.
No one denies that an adequate intake of vitamins is essential; however, vitamins can and should be obtained from eating enough healthy foods rather than from swallowing vitamin supplements.
Then what about vitamins being a great source of energy? Some multivitamin ads do indeed claim that their supplements boost energy; and some professional athletes gobble handfuls of vitamin pills to increase their energy and strength. But researchers proved long ago that energy comes from calories, not vitamins. The highly touted cholesterol-lowering effects of substances added to some multivitamin supplements? Still unproven.
All this is not to say that specific vitamins supplements are never desirable. Vitamins can be valuable in certain situations:
- Folic acid supplements in women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant can help to prevent serious neural-tube defects that affect the baby's brain and spine.
- Supplements that contain more vitamin D and calcium than is present in regular multivitamin pills can help older men, and especially women, avoid osteoporosis and bone fractures.
- Supplements of vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, zinc, and copper may slow the progression of vision loss in people with early macular degeneration.
And multivitamins are beneficial for some entire groups of people:
- those on a very-low-calorie weight-loss diet
- strict vegetarians
- heavy alcohol drinkers
- individuals who are not getting an adequate diet because they are too sick or too poor--or live by themselves and are unable to prepare proper meals for themselves
The results of the studies on vitamins so far point to one conclusion: Healthy people who eat enough calories from a varied diet do not benefit from multivitamin supplements.
